Why Your Company Needs to Tell Stories — Not Just Make Videos

By Alejandra Rodríguez R.

Producing a video is easier than ever. Getting someone to actually watch it, remember it, and connect with your brand is a different story.

Companies produce corporate videos, interviews, testimonials, reels, and social media content every day. But beautiful images, a professional camera, and polished editing do not automatically make a message meaningful or memorable.

Very often, the difference comes down to something far more powerful: the story you are telling.

A Video Informs. A Story Connects.

Traditional corporate videos often begin with what the company wants to say:

Who we are. What we do. How long we’ve been in business. What services we offer.

Storytelling starts somewhere else. It asks:

Why should the person on the other side of the screen care?

A compelling story puts people at the center: a customer who faced a challenge, an entrepreneur who turned an idea into a business, an employee whose life was changed by a project, or a community transformed by an initiative.

That is where connection begins.

And there is a reason this matters. In an environment saturated with corporate content, stories that trigger an emotional response have a greater opportunity to stand out from content built solely around institutional messaging. Recent research into B2B communication also points to a significant amount of corporate content generating little or no emotional response.

Storytelling Doesn’t Mean Making Stories Up

Quite the opposite.

Some of the most powerful corporate stories already exist within the company.

They can be found in its founders, employees, customers, projects, challenges, achievements, and impact. The creative work is about finding those stories and shaping them into narratives that connect with an audience.

That is why good audiovisual production begins long before anyone turns on a camera.

It begins by asking:

Who are we trying to reach? What do we want them to feel? What do we want them to remember? And what do we want them to do after watching?

Move From Saying “We’re the Best” to Showing Why

Imagine a company that wants to communicate that it provides exceptional service.

It could put an executive in front of a camera and have them say:

“We have 20 years of experience and provide outstanding service.”

Or it could tell the story of a real customer: show the challenge that person faced, follow the journey, and let the customer explain in their own words how the company helped solve the problem.

The underlying message may be similar.

The way the audience experiences it is completely different.

Storytelling Is Also a Business Strategy

Telling a compelling story does not mean sacrificing business objectives.

A video can create an emotional connection while also building reputation, explaining a service, presenting a company to investors, strengthening a brand, generating trust, or helping attract new customers.

The key is making sure every story has a purpose.

Corporate video is increasingly moving toward a combination of strategy, authenticity, storytelling, and strong production values, rather than relying on polished visuals alone.
